LIVEABLE CITIES

The liveability of cities around the world is under pressure. KuiperCompagnons has a clear vision on how to (re)develop our cities based on inclusive and innovative concepts for robust, resilient and complete city centers and neighborhoods; for accessibility and sustainable mobility; for diverse and resilient local economies; and for vibrant public spaces, healthy environments and affordability.

Improving the individual systems that make up a city increases the liveability of a city overall. We focus on the critical needs of people and place people centrally when searching for how we can contribute to improving the lives of the rapidly growing number of urban citizens around the world.

Water, Energy, Food, Communities
Water, energy, food and (affordable) living need to be secured to sustain the next generations in the megacities of the future. Stable economies, strong leadership, cohesive and engaged communities, employment opportunities, healthy environment and qualitative and accessible education is required to create resilient liveable and loveable cities.

Where we operate
We focus on the large cities around the world where urbanization is exerting the greatest stresses on the liveability of these societies. Our strength is to find solutions within these complex urban environments. We work from our office in Rotterdam and from our partners’ offices in the countries of our projects.

Our partners
In order to provide solutions that work within the complexity of cities, KuiperCompagnons collaborate with a group of highly innovative partners in the private, public, academic, and non-profit sectors. As every question is different, please feel free to contact us. We would be pleased to deliver a tailor made approach for your projects in order to deliver more and more excellent examples of responsible and sustainable projects in global cities.

Adaptive Planning

Adaptive Planning

Most cities are located in delta areas and are facing new challenges because of climate change, land subsidence, urban heat island and sea-level rise. A resilient delta city strategy helps cities to become robust and resilient and able to meet these challenges. It is based on an integrated approach to face issues of safety, health, habitability, mobility & energy which includes all urban stakeholders. A more widespread result of the urbanization is the increase of hard surface within urban fabric, resulting in stormwater runoffs and land subsidence.
The sponge city promotes an infrastructure that collects excess rainfall and integrates flood control in urban planning. It will not only be able to deal with excess water, but also reuse rain water in order to deal with water shortages.

Energy Transition

Energy Transition

Successful circular and adaptive (urban) landscapes require a balance in size, scale and complexity. The current central and large-scale energy production is sensitive to geopolitical dependence, makes a country or municipality vulnerable and does not appeal to any form of pride and self-determination of the local citizen. Small-scale individual developments at plot level will not bring us to 100% sustainable generated energy on time. They also lack an integrated vision and are too small-scale to relate other tasks.

Joining forces and working together to generate 100% sustainable energy can work as a catalyst for area development and the transition of our cities, landscapes and economies. The condition for acceptance is that interventions in the environment of citizens must make a recognizable positive contribution to their living environment. If we are also able to use the energy transition to meet other goals, ambitions and wishes of citizens, we will be able to develop a carbon free environment.

Food Resiliency

Food Resiliency

Apart from public spaces & parks with a strong aesthetic & practical outlook and big-scale landscaping with a more strategical outlook, in recent years we have been focusing on urban agriculture as an emerging topic.

The world population is growing and megacities are expanding. The biggest cities tend to be located in delta areas. The current urbanization rate will further transform fertile agricultural delta land into city scape, making food security an increased issue for most cities and therefore the quest for new and sustainable ways of producing food increases. We are part of Urban Farming Partners. A group of experts in the fields of food, logistics, planning and architecture and working together with the Dutch Government. We are currently working on solutions to reintegrate food production within city limits in cooperation with several metropolises around the world.

Building communities

Building communities

It is estimated that in today’s urban era about 1.5 million people move to the cities per week. Cities around the world are facing the challenge to absorb these new city dwellers, while improving city life at the same time. This means the city structure has to undergo a substantial transformation towards a highly compact, yet pleasant and livable urban fabric and in every situation the affordability should be central. Apart from residential transformations, more and more brownfield redevelopments are used to create additional city life, usually becoming cultural hotspots. Greenfield developments require yet again another approach, with a keen sense for placemaking being key. In all of these domains, KuiperCompagnons has built an extensive portfolio, experience and expertise
